Moses…and Aaron

But Moses said, “O Lord, please send someone else to do it.” Exodus 4:13

Suggested reading, Exodus 4:13-29

Moses!!

Oh, my goodness!

You did not just say, please send someone else. Really? What is your problem man?!

Just do what He says!

Funny thing is, when I was typing out these previous sentences, I had a picture of Moses in heaven, shaking his head in wonder, saying the very same things to me!

Chris! Oh, my goodness! What is your problem, woman?! Just do what He says!

If we would just TRUST THE LORD, who happens to be ALMIGHTY!

In our passage today, God burned with anger over Moses’ downward-spiral-self-assessment concerning his inability to speak. However, instead of spewing flames of fire from the bush, which was probably very tempting, God took in a deep perfect breath of patience and spoke out his plan.

The Lord said, “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and his heart will be glad when he sees you. You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do. He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouth and as if you were God to him. But take this staff in your hand so you can do miracles (v.14-17).

To paraphrase the rest of today’s passage, Moses went down the mountain, received his father-in-law’s blessing to leave with his wife and two sons, had a run in with the Law concerning his son’s circumcision (or lack thereof), and met up with his brother Aaron who had come to meet him at the mountain of God. Together they traveled 200 miles back to Egypt and approached the elders of Israel. When these men heard the news of their upcoming deliverance, they bowed and worshipped the Lord.

Thoughts:

Today was a full passage with many take-aways. The one I want to land on is Moses and Aaron. Due to Aaron’s role in biblical history, as well as God’s sovereignty, (he was already on his way to meet Moses), I believe God had Aaron in mind to accompany Moses from the beginning. Moses, with all his but…but…but’s, wasn’t giving God a chance to speak! God knew Aaron was the right pick for Moses, and Moses was the right pick for Aaron. Neither were perfect. None of us are. But God calls us anyway!

This makes me think of how important it is to not “go it alone” in ministry, or in life! We all have our strengths and weaknesses, and when we walk together, we help one another in both of these places.

Who is it that encourages you? Who do you encourage? Spend some time thanking the Lord for him or her, or for a ministry or church. Then maybe even reach out and say thank you to them via a text, a phone call, or card in the mail.

God knows, due to our potential downward spiral self-assessments, we need each other!

Going deeper and sweeter: Proverbs 27:17; Ecclesiastes 4:9-10; Luke 10:1-2

Dear Lord,

I pray that each one of us will have an “Aaron” in our lives. This friend/spouse/sister cannot replace you of course; but Lord, you know we need human relationships—you wired us this way! So, we ask in faith for a like-minded, like-hearted, God-fearing friend. Amen.
