ACTS of the Apostles, Part 2
Learning How to be Daring and Dynamic
Read Acts 17:16-34
Focus Verses: Acts 17:19-20
And they (the Greeks in Athens) took him (Paul) and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? For you bring some strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean.”
In our passage today Paul is in Athens waiting on Silas and Timothy to join him. He walked about the city, observing all the idols they worshipped. “Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new.” (v. 21)
These people were interested in Paul’s “new teaching”, so he delivered an amazing speech that they could relate to by telling them that their altar marked “unknown God” could actually be known! He proceeded to share 4 basic truths about God (as explained in Be Daring by Warren Wiersbe) .
1) The greatness of God: He is the Creator
2) The goodness of God: He is the Provider
3) The government of God: He is the Ruler
4) The grace of God: He is the Savior
Paul, instead of yelling at the people and being mad at their beliefs, he used this wise tactic to bring the gospel to the group. He used something they were already familiar with as a bridge to connect with them. Even though Paul’s message was not accepted by all Athenians who listened to him, some did. And, remember one soul is worth it ALL.
Let this lesson inspire you. We can be daring and dynamic without shouting from the street corners and condemning people. Take the gospel to your “Athens” by finding an entry point/common ground so you can relate and share.
Dear Heavenly Father,
You are indeed our mighty Creator, Provider, Ruler and Savior. We worship you; give you thanks and praise you for your glory. Let our eyes, mind and heart be open to the place and the people that need your love. Help us to be prepared for all divine appointments. Let us weave your words into their hearts and lives as you direct. We’re praying this all for your glory. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen
