ACTS of the Apostles, Part 2
Learning How to be Daring and Dynamic
Read Acts 17:1-15
Focus Verses: Acts 17:11-12
Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. Many of them therefore believed, with not a few Greek women of high standing as well as men.
.
In this passage we see, in both Thessalonica and Berea, that many received the teachings of Paul and Silas as truth. However, in both cities, opposition driven by jealousy of the Jews was also prevalent.
It’s so interesting to me that no matter what time period we study, people act just like people do!! The Jews in this passage are a good example of self serving and self seeking with their jealous actions taking over. They even followed Paul and Silas all the way up to Berea to stir up the crowd there. That’s a pretty serious commitment to the “green eyed monster”.
The people of Berea chose to open the Scriptures for themselves to search for the truths to verify or disapprove the message delivered by Paul and Silas. I think it’s important to ask ourselves how do we interpret sermons and teachings? Are we acting on our opinions that are, in a way self serving or are we digging into scripture to see what indeed is true? When in doubt always compare what you hear with what the Bible says . A preacher or teacher who gives God’s true message will never contradict or explain away anything that is found in God’s word.
In a perfect world, our ministry would go flowingly and flawlessly; but Scripture shows us that we as believers will face resistance, and also tells us how to proceed in the midst of it. As the Boy Scouts say- “Be Prepared” . We are to suit up with the armor of God. We can learn much from Paul and Silas. As Amy pointed out on Friday, it most likely wasn't all smooth sailing for them . They had their moments and cried out to the Lord and he was there for them. He is as real and present today as he was then.
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the words you provide for us to learn the real truth; not just opinion of others. Help us in discerning your truth from anything else we may hear. Keep us steadfast and rooted in you so we can spread your word to others. Hold us up when we are faced with opposition. Give us protection from lies. May you be the victor- not us, not lies. Give others listening ears and heart to receive you. May your word spread like wildfire to those we encounter. Amen
