ACTS: A Way to Live
The Gospel of Luke—Lent 2022
Read Luke 19:45-48
Focus Verse—Luke 19:45-46
Then he entered the temple and began driving out those who were selling. “It is written,” said Jesus, “My house will be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of robbers.”
ACTion for Reflection:
We continue to follow Jesus’ journey to the cross as he enters Jerusalem. His first stop is the temple where he saw the temple being misused and began to drive out vendors who were selling things (i.e., animals for sacrifice at unfair prices). People were “wheeling and dealing” as if it were a marketplace, not a place of worship.
Notice in verse 46 how Jesus justifies his actions, “It is written.” The Jews were not allowing God’s Word to define their worship. So, we should ask ourselves, “Are we allowing God’s Word to show us how to worship?” We should sing God’s Word, pray God’s Word, preach God’s Word, respond in faith to God’s Word, and do this for the glory of God. Do we delight in God’s Word? If we are focusing on his Word and turning our hearts toward him, we will not turn our focus on other things. And as we delight in God’s Word, we will be changed. His house of worship should be just that....a place to delight in Him with community!
ACTion to Live Out: Encourage and share more about the importance of God’s House!
An idea for today is to invite a non-church goer to attend a prayer service/worship service/special event at your church.
Dear Lord Jesus,
Thank you for teaching us how to live! After we daily reflect on your life-giving words, help us to then, through your Spirit, get up and ACT. Give us hearts of compassion, hands of generosity, and feet that take your good news to the world. What an honor it is to be your image bearer. Amen.
